Who Will You Hire?
Imagine This
Who to Hire
You’re a graphic designer for a Fortune 500 company.
The company is highly motivated to rank high on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) score. They have implemented a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policy.
All employees have undergone sensitivity training to detect and eliminate racial and sexual biases, i.e., avoid offenses such as misgendering their coworkers.
You’ve been promoted manager for the art department. Your first assignment is to hire your replacement. Today, you will interview two applicants for the position of graphic designer.
Your employer uses the applicant tracking system (ATS). Artificial intelligence has prescreened these two candidates.
Applicant #1
His portfolio is impressive. He has much experience using all of the art and software tools in the department, including the use of AI design tools. He is well-spoken and has a good sense of humor. You perceive him to be genuine. His attire is appropriate. His references from previous employers is glowing. They are private companies, not corporate organizations. You notice a reference from BGEA. You ask about that. He hesitates, then boldly says, “I volunteer with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.” His education ended in high school.
BTW, he is white.
Applicant #2
Her portfolio is decent, but not impressive. She is familiar with some of the software your department uses. She is well-spoken. Her attire is appropriate (though her sparkling rainbow earrings are a bit distracting). Her demeanor could be termed no-nonsense. She has references from leaders in Planned Parenthood and Trans Alliance. She’s familiar with corporate culture. You ask her why she wants to work with your employer. She replies, “I’m delighted to know that your employer is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. I can contribute to that.” She has a BA degree from collage.
BTW, she is African American.
