Signs Following
“Follow Me,” was a common call Jesus made some 2,000 years ago. It’s as relevant today as it was then. Many of us have answered the call. As we set out to follow Him, we soon realized that to walk in the footsteps of Jesus is to walk by faith.
Sometimes Jesus rewards our walk of faith followed by showing us a sign or wonder. That’s happened to Myrna Gutierrez during her ‘Plein Air Prayer’ outreach.
Myrna, a longtime friend, invited me to paint with her at Mariachi Square in Boyle Heights, CA. As we were painting the gazebo, Myrna heard a man’s voice in the distance. She told me his voice reminded her of an artist she had met in downtown Los Angeles. When curiosity finally got the best of her, she approached him. I could tell by her reaction that it was the artist whom she had told me about weeks earlier. She brought him over and introduced him to me.
As the old expression goes, ‘What are the odds?’ How likely is it that someone would have a second encounter with a person within months, whom they had met only briefly. Plus, this meeting would be at a different location miles away. Consider this, there are over 3.9 million people in Los Angeles, which is a city of about 502 square miles. The odds are almost incalculable; unless you calculate God into the equation. These supernatural occurrences can let us know that we are indeed walking in His footsteps. Still, we walk by faith, not by signs and wonders.
More importantly than the ‘chance’ meeting with the artist was the opportunity Myrna and I had to pray for a young man who was en route to the hospital for treatment of a severe infection.
