Transportation Accelerates
Prior to the 18th century, transportation didn’t change much over millenniums. People walked, rowed boats and rode animals. A horse was the fastest mode of transportation. It’s top speed was 30, maybe 40 miles per hour.
Now earthlings have traveled as far as the moon and have sent unmanned craft out into our galaxy. NASA’s Juno spacecraft, the fastest man made object ever recorded. It flew at an incredible speed of 165,000 mph as it approached Jupiter. Yet, we’ve barely stepped off the threshold of earth into our Milky Way Galaxy, which is 100,000 light years across.
That’s a snapshot history of travel. Let’s look at the increase of knowledge.
Knowledge Accelerates
Knowledge passed on by oral tradition or text painstakingly written on stone, animal skins or other substrate throughout most of human history. It circulated slowly. People learned by studying nature. Movable type came circa 1000. It is accredited to Chinese inventor Bi Shing. In 1439, Johnnas Gutenberg invented the printing press. It was one of the greatest inventions of all time, as it allowed the masses to read the Bible for themselves.
In the early 20th century, knowledge doubled approximately every 100 years. By the 1960s, that rate had increased to around every 25 years. More recently, it has been suggested that knowledge doubles every 12 to13 months, and some estimates even propose a doubling rate as short as every 12 hours for certain specialized fields.
The 21st century has seen the creation of artificial intelligence. This new technology is being received quite differently than all previous advances and access to knowledge. Although Ai dates back to the 1950’s, only in the past few years has it been available to the average non-tech individuals. There was a great deal of optimism regarding the doors AI could open. Medical breakthroughs, scientific discoveries, education and more.
Artificial intelligence developers knew long before the public of the potential dangers of AI. Now they’re speaking out. There is genuine concern among all of the tech leaders when they discuss the dangers of AI.
These advancements in transportation and knowledge point to a 2500 year old prophecy in the Bible. That led me to believe that we are living in the time of the end. Read the book of Daniel. Leave your comments.
