Street Preachers

When I was surfing the net yesterday, I googled something like ’street preachers’. There are some Christ-like people taking the gospel to the streets. Then there are the others; such as the man who hollers at people at college campuses, reminding them of their sin more than encouraging them to look toward a forgiving Savior. I saw one group carrying signs that read, ‘God Hates You, Sodomites, Abortionists and Drunkards.’ Is that so? I thought God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Certainly God hates those acts, yet loves the actors. Continue Reading →

Mission Over Method

February 16th, 2010 | 0 Comments

Mission-Over-MethodThe method you use to reach out to others for Christ is not nearly as important as the mission. The streets are not scripted, so when you sense the need to pull away from the thing you are doing that has drawn people to you (to Jesus), do it. Drop the paint brush, sewing needle, golf clubs, etc., and focus on the ones nearest you. Don’t let them walk away without knowing that they have had an encounter with the living God.

Complete the method on another day, but finish the mission today.

When you’re out on the streets seeking the lost, be prepared to meet some unusual characters. Now that I think of it, those characters might think the same thing of you if you’re standing behind an easel talking to curious onlookers about Jesus. Continue Reading →

The lady pushing the stroller  said that she attends a mosque. I asked her what she knew of Christianity. She said that she respected all religions and went on to say that she was a Christian on some days, a Muslim on others, a Buddhist on others…that they are all the same and all lead to God. Is that so? Continue Reading →

Advent

Imagine a row of vending machines at the foot of a high grassy knoll. Ahead lies the desert. One machine is stocked with candy. Another is stocked with popular music CD’s. Still another is stocked with sex toys. Row after row of vending machines offering things to satisfy every earthly desire. You have a vending machine filled with water. Continue Reading →

Robert of Detroit

In September of 2001, I was in Detroit, Michigan working on the movie, 8 Mile. Whenever I had the weekend off, I would go into the community and paint. This area was once populated by the wealthy whites living in their stately mansions. However, riots ripped through the city in 1967 and many of the homes were destroyed or burned. Some 24 years later, the city had not yet removed the eyesores even though the area is spotted with structures which had been purchased and restored by blacks now living in this war-zone looking area. God has all the answers. The more I talk to people on the streets, the more I learn that He has put a bunch of those answers in other people. Such was the case with Joel (not real name), who I met Monday afternoon. Continue Reading →

Palm Springs Wind Farm

Sometimes it’s good to get away from the city to a quiet place. I stopped on the side of the road on my way to a desert place to paint this wind farm. I became aware that much power can be generated without a lot of noise. I thought back on times when I saw men standing on street corners (usually in downtown Los Angeles near skid row) belting out warnings of doom and damnation coming to those who rejected Jesus. Is God calling you to take the gospel to the nations? You’ve probably heard the admonition to start in your own back yard (neighborhood). That’s not only scriptural (see Acts 1:8), but it is practical. Continue Reading →

Made Righteous

Los Angeles is a city of hidden identities. Actors take on names to support their oversized egos as middle aged moms take on figures and faces to mimic their favorite supermodel heroines. Los Angeles is not alone in its efforts to mask something unsavory on the inside with something glitzy on the outside. Continue Reading →
