| Christ The Redeemer monument reaches 30 meters (98 feet) tall and looks out over all Rio de Janeiro. It stands atop Corcovado Mountain. In the 16th century, the Portuguese named the mountain Pináculo da Tentação (The Pinnacle [peak] of Temptation), alluding to the Biblical Mountain. In the 17th century the mountain was re-named Corcovado.
